This construction plan includes a 26-tank hatchery, service ponds, parking areas, and sheds, covering enough area to ensure that Atlantic Salmon can be raised to maturity in this location. This large size will ensure that we can provide Aroostook, Piscataquis, and Penobscot Counties with ample salmon populations.
Our hatchery will be made up of 20 larger tanks, designed to house as many adult salmon as possible, and 6 smaller tanks, designed to be isolation and observational areas. This facility will focus on raising young salmon from smolts to adults while the Dug Brook Hatchery will remain our main hatching area, raisng salmon from eggs to smolts.
Currently, we rely on our neighbors to the North in Canada for our salmon eggstock. However, with the funding and completion of our proposed facility, we will be able to rear our own salmon, producing adults that we can release into our waters, once again establishing a Maine population of Atlantic Salmon.
